SkyShield – Europe growing a spine to attach a replacement brain

Initial draft for short post to attract initial interest…

This document needs to be studied carefully and spread widely.

Signatories include people who do know what they are talking about such as:

56. Richard Shirreff KCB, CBE – General (ret.); Former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, UK;

69. Philip Breedlove – 4-star General, USAF (ret.); former SACEUR NATO, USA;
70. Ben Hodges – Lt. General (ret.), US Army; former Commanding General, United States Army Europe, USA;

Guardian article about the SkyShield plan:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/mar/06/european-led-ukraine-air-protection-plan-could-halt-russian-missile-attacks

Excerpt from Guardian: ‘A European air force of 120 fighter jets could be deployed to secure the skies from Russian attacks on Kyiv and western Ukraine without necessarily provoking a wider conflict with Moscow, according to a plan drawn up by military experts.

‘Sky Shield, its proponents argue, would be a European-led air protection zone operated separately from Nato to halt Russian cruise missile and drone attacks on cities and infrastructure, potentially operating as part of the “truce in the sky” proposed by Ukraine’s president, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, this week’.

  1. Skyshield is a great idea. The problem for NATO is the fear of escalation. Ever since the war started Russia has kept NATO from giving decisive help by threatening to escalate to a nuclear war and it is pretty scary. Russia has 5,580 warheads but the question must be asked. Do any of them work? Nukes are high maintenance weapons. The UK has 225 of which 120 are ready for deployment. The UK spends 3.2 billion pounds pa on maintenance. Russia has 1,710 ready for deployment. The bill for Russia to maintain these weapons must be tens of billions of pounds. Considering that the Ukraine war exposed the fact that money to modernise the Russian army was siphoned off to buy houses in London and luxury yachts I am skeptical that the nuclear arsenal is being properly maintained.

  2. Strange that this proposal, endorsed by 73 high profile military leaders and politicians, has not been given much attention in the mainstream media.

    Zelenskyy recently spoke of the need for a “truce in the sky” and that is what the proposal seeks. It’s big news, in my opinion: European air-forces would deploy 120 jet fighters to protect civilian populations in Ukrainian cities from Russian missiles, long range drones and bombs, as well as protect infrastructure.

    It’s significant that the proposal is to reliant on NATO but adopts the option of a coalition of the willing approach.

    Among the signatories is a former NATO Supreme Commander in Europe. A SkyShield would be more effective than the deployment of ground forces, according to these experts.

    There is no logical reason as to why Australia and other non-European countries should not offer air support to SkyShield.
