  1. Arthur clarifies complex issues; in this case, he discusses the situations in both Palestine/Israel, and Ukraine/Russia, and then goes on to describe what can be done. He explains how the veto powers of the Security Council of the United Nations, which have been a problem on so many occasions since it was first established, can actually be overcome. That, in fact, there is a precedent!

He despairs over what passes for the current Left (which, as far as he’s concerned is all over the place, and which he describes as the “pseudo- left”). He makes clear his own position by quoting from the Communist Manifesto :

“…Communists disdain to conceal their views and aims. They openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions.

Then he adds: “And it [the Manifesto] went on to say that one of the first tasks of the working class, I can’t remember the phrase, but it was to win the battle for democracy, the battle of democracy.

And that battle of democracy involves two aspects, a battle for democracy,…( most of the world hasn’t reached the level of full bourgeois democracy yet), and the battle within bourgeois democracy,…[i.e.] for the working class to become the ruling class.

Both of those are really alien to… people who call themselves leftists these days, [they] just don’t have those concepts.

As always, Arthur reminds us of what being on the Left is supposed to be about.
